Fracking Is Safe Right?

Last week the North Carolina house voted to allow fracking for natural gas in the state with approval from the governor. This sounds like a great idea, you know using our own "natural resources right here at home". I mean Exxon commercials provide reassurance or at least I think. Offshore drilling was suppose to be safe but ask the gulf coast how that went.

So I have taken up the interest in educating myself about the process of fracking of natural gas. The more I read the frustration built. The facts are disturbing with the process itself we are essentially poisoning the earth with no repair. Fracking has taken away peoples basic rights of clean safe drinking water along with contributing to health problems. The sad part is it seems like the majority of people don't want fracking so why have our elected officials let down the people again.
Find It On Nextflix
Your sink could become flammable
You could get the chance to hunt, fish, or hike near one of these retention ponds
Or get to view these beautiful brine tanks
They even come in "emerica" paint

I kinda have a soft spot for these new indie style documentaries and thanks to Netflix I have a few of them to watch, so Sara ordered Gasland (Not available for streaming). This was the other side of fracking, people with sinks on fire, fracking near national parks and more disturbing stories of fracking gone wrong.
Here is the trailer:
(If you don't read the post at least watch the video)

Fracking is on the verge of destroying our outdoors and the most important resource...water. I have sent my representatives emails not sure if they will do any good but hey I did what I could. This fracking business will not stop until it ruins drinking water for a major metropolitan area.

So my challenge is to educate yourself about fracking, choose your side and if your against it do something blog about it, talk to your friends, relatives, and elected political representatives. Depending on your location fracking may take your favorite fishing stream, national park water, or even your homes drinking water.

Commitment To Conservation: Costa Del Mar

Have you ever felt like sunglasses are a rip off, if you are cheap like me a pair over $30 is steep. However owning a pair of good pair of polarized sunglasses is a must for any outdoorsman. That why I recommend putting a pair on the ol'' Christmas list. Good gear does not come cheap, hence Costa Del Mar who's shades run from $100 upward.

The strong features of shucking the money out for a pair would include high quality lenses, and possibly the most comfortable frames in the business. The good part of Costa's are they are made by fisherman, die hard fisherman.

With that being said coastal conservation is at the fore front of their business. Partnering with Kenny Chesney Costa Donated $50,000 to Coastal Conservation Association. Who advocates for the conservation of our marine resources.

Personally I like the fact that Costa is very conservation minded, check out their website to see what they are doing to give back. The next or first time you purchase a pair of Costa's to mentally ease the pain just think of the over priced part of the shades goes to conservation.

Sunday Morning Coffee and Gruesome Advertising

There is nothing like fixing a strong cup of coffee and flipping on the Outdoor Channel on Sunday mornings. This happens to be a habit as I enjoy watching shows for ideas for travel and to pick up a few tips. Now we all know this comes at the price of twenty minutes of commercials and ten minutes of good hunting or fishing. Today happened to be different as I sat there watching the commercials they became somewhat troubling for me. The one thing that troubles me the most is the marketing of hunting equipment companies. Everything from the names of the brands to the rabbit slogans and commercials.

Brand names such as Bone Collector and Rage are troubling, I mean come who thinks of this stuff. I never pursue game as a result of rage or have the mentality of just killing for bones. However the trend of marketing is headed towards this. What is the purpose of the grim reaper in your logo Excalibur, this is not needed and shows a cave man way of thinking.

The broadhead industry has become flooded of these ignorent branding and labeling of products. Brands such as Rage and Grim Reaper, along with a few others who's certain products naming carry the same format of gruesome labels.

The worst of the worst has to be Rage broad heads, yes you make quality broad heads. In spite of this there is no need to advertise how much damage you can cause a kill. Please leave the gushing blood dinosaurs and logos out of advertisements.

As an advid outdoorsman I personally don't purchase items from these companies. Many will say I am overreacting over a name but it is more than that it. It's the example and mindset we are setting for the younger generation to draw as much blood, kill as many as possible, and hunt for antlers or mounts. Instead of hunting with respect for the game we take and understanding our role of ethical gathering.

With all this being said one day I hope to enjoy my cup of coffee on Sunday mornings with a lack of fist pumping middle age men wearing a kill em all hoodie.
